High Speed Chase Ends in Head-On Collision

Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but yesterday while we were celebrating making several fun projects with new Stampin' Up! products someone else had apparently been celebrating too. Scott & Casey were outside when all of the sudden a car veered off the road, knocked over our mailbox, went down in the ditch, spun around and then raced away. Scott was irritated that the guy took out our mailbox and didn't stop, so he jumped in his truck immediately called 911 and began chasing the speeder down the road. The man blew through the 4-way stop into the construction area where men were working on the "closed road". While giving the dispatcher on 911 play-by-play action, he continued to follow. The man went through the round-a-bout that is currently under construction, only to find that all of the construction equipment was blocking that "closed road" as well. He turned around and headed back toward Scott. Scott saw him coming and thought that the man would stop, but instead he hit him head-on. In his hurry to get the license plate number, call 911 etc., Scott didn't put his seatbelt on. He got a scrape on his head, but other than that he was ok. His truck however, that we have only had for about a week and a half, has some damage. He was still on the phone with 911, who had dispatched the police, but with all of the road closures, they were having trouble finding them. When they did, they found that the man was drunk, 3 times above the legal limit. This was about 1:00 in the afternoon. They also found that they had "dealt" with him before. They handcuffed him and hauled him off to jail. Scott told the guy that if he had stopped when he hit the mailbox, he could have just paid for the mailbox, called his wife to come get him and that would have been the end of it. But, he had to run, and it ticked Scott off. Now who knows what kind of charges he will incur. It is a felony to leave the scene of an accident, speeding in a construction zone, not to mention driving drunk. As Scott drove back through the construction area to come home, all of the construction workers gave him the "thumbs up"! I praise him for his quick thinking, and am thankful that he wasn't hurt. I am also glad to have one less drunk driver on the roads.
